Everything you need to give every dollar a job

Two pillars lead: a credit-card model that shows its math and a funded plan to get out of debt. Every capability below is real and accurate to the cent — anything still on the roadmap is labeled as such.

Shows its math · pillar one

A credit card model that shows its work

Most budgeters treat credit cards as a black box. Earmarkr shows exactly how every card charge moves money into a payment reserve — the cash you set aside to pay the card — and reconciles that earmark to the cent.

  • A funded charge moves money from the spending category into the card’s payment reserve — no double-counting.
  • The unfunded portion is tracked as card debt, visible but kept off your Ready-to-Assign.
  • A transparent payment ledger with a per-charge trace: funded charges in, payments out, funded-vs-owed at a glance.

Gets you out of debt · pillar two

A funded plan to get out of debt

Debt calculators don’t know your budget; budgets don’t plan your payoff. Earmarkr closes the loop — your debt payments are real, funded budget categories, so the plan to get out of debt is the same money you’re actually budgeting.

  • Every loan and card payment is a funded budget category — your payoff plan is your budget, not a separate calculator.
  • Loan & mortgage payoff projections replay your real payments and show the interest you save by paying extra.
  • The credit-card reserve keeps new spending separate from old debt, so you always know exactly what you’re carrying.

On the roadmap: a guided snowball/avalanche planner that turns these pieces into a single funded payoff plan — built on the payoff engine that’s already here.

Bring your whole YNAB budget with you

Export your budget from YNAB and drop the .zip into Earmarkr. Accounts, categories, transactions, transfers, and every month’s budgeted amounts come across — and before anything is written, you preview your whole budget and reconcile it back to YNAB.

  • One upload: the YNAB “Export budget” .zip (Register + Plan CSVs).
  • Preview the math first — projected Ready-to-Assign, every category’s Available, and card reserves — before you commit.
  • A per-account balance reconciliation report, plus a prompt to confirm any loan balance that needs a closer look.

The core method

Give every dollar a job

True zero-based budgeting: assign the money you actually have until Ready-to-Assign hits zero. Carryover, activity, and available roll forward month to month, exactly as the method intends.

  • Ready-to-Assign is your real available cash, not a cash-flow guess.
  • Carried / assigned / activity / available per category, every month.
  • Overspending is handled honestly — cash shortfalls reduce next month, card debt does not.

Connect your accounts

One-click bank sync via Plaid — or import your own files

Connect your bank and cards with Plaid for fast, in-app linking, then let Earmarkr sync automatically every day. You never share your bank password with us. Manual accounts are always supported — and when Plaid doesn’t cover a bank, you can import the OFX, QFX, or CSV files your bank gives you.

  • Plaid Link for fast, secure, in-app bank connection with automatic daily sync.
  • Import OFX/QFX/CSV statement files for banks Plaid doesn’t cover — deduped automatically, statement after statement.
  • Automatic reconciliation matches and dedupes transactions however they arrive.

Reports, net worth, and Age of Money

Spending by category and payee, income vs. expense, cash flow, net worth over time, and budget-vs-actual — plus YNAB’s headline Age of Money metric. Export any report to CSV or PDF.

  • Net-worth trend signed correctly by account type, including credit and loans.
  • Age of Money — how long your dollars sit before you spend them.
  • CSV + tabular PDF exports that reconcile to the screen, to the cent.

Fund with intent

Category goals and targets

Set a monthly funding target, a target balance, or a target balance by a date. Earmarkr shows exactly how much a category needs this month and colors it on-track or behind.

  • Monthly, target-balance, and by-date goal types.
  • “Needs $X this month” with one-click fund.
  • On-track colouring so nothing quietly falls behind.

The mechanics

Loan & mortgage payoff schedules

Store a loan or mortgage’s terms and Earmarkr projects the payoff — replaying your actual payments, showing interest saved from extra payments, and (for mortgages) deriving the escrow portion of each payment.

  • Amortization computed in integer minor units — no float drift.
  • Extra payments move your projected payoff earlier and show interest saved.
  • Mortgages model fixed principal + interest with derived escrow.

Trust the numbers

Reconcile against the real world

Confirm which transactions cleared, match your statement balance, post an adjustment if needed, then lock the confirmed history so a later sync can never quietly change it.

  • Cleared-vs-uncleared tracking with a running cleared balance.
  • Locked history is protected from sync overwrites.
  • Works for both manual and synced accounts.

Less busywork

Smart payee rules & auto-categorization

Earmarkr learns how you categorize a payee and applies it on import, so the “needs review” pile shrinks over time. Exact-payee rules auto-apply; broader matches suggest with one-click accept.

  • Learned rules from the way you already categorize.
  • Auto-apply on import, or suggest for one-click accept.
  • Rules never overwrite a category you set by hand.

Private and precise

Bank-grade security, accurate to the cent

Your data is protected end to end and never sold. Secrets are envelope-encrypted, passwords are Argon2id, two-factor is mandatory, every sensitive action is logged, and every dollar is stored as integer minor units — a one-cent error is treated as a bug.

  • AES-256-GCM envelope-encrypted secrets; append-only audit log.
  • Argon2id passwords + mandatory TOTP two-factor — and we never sell your data.
  • Integer-minor-unit money math with property-tested invariants.
