Working with transactions

Add, edit, categorize, and split transactions — and clear the "needs review" badge.

Transactions opens on an accounts overview: every account with its balance, how much is cleared versus uncleared, anything needing review, and when it was last reconciled. Click an account to see its activity.

All activity shows every account at once — useful for searching, less so for reconciling.

Adding a transaction

  1. Open the account.
  2. Use the add row at the top of the list.
  3. Set date, payee, amount, and category.
  4. Use the Money out / Money in toggle for the direction.

Manually-entered details are protected — a later bank sync won't overwrite what you typed.

Categorizing

Click the category cell and pick one. The change is applied immediately and your budget, card reserves, and reports all update.

Needs review counts transactions genuinely waiting on a decision from you: uncategorized, on an on-budget account, not a transfer, not an opening balance. Transfers and starting balances don't need categories, so they never inflate the badge.

Click the badge to see just those transactions.

Suggestions. Where a rule matches, a suggested category appears with an ✓ Accept chip. Categorizing a payee by hand also saves a rule automatically, so the next transaction from that payee is handled for you — see payee rules.

Bulk categorizing

Select several transactions with the checkboxes and apply one category to all of them. Much faster after a first import.

Splitting a transaction

When one purchase covers several categories — the supermarket trip that's part groceries, part household:

  1. Click the transaction to open it.
  2. Choose Split.
  3. Add a line per category with its amount.

The lines must total the transaction exactly. A running $X unallocated / Balances ✓ indicator shows where you are.

Split lines are what count toward your budget and reports; the parent counts toward the account balance. Nothing is double-counted.

You can re-split or remove a split at any time. Transfers, reconciled transactions, and opening balances can't be split.

Searching and filtering

Search matches description, memo, and payee. Filter by category, or by Uncategorized to work through the review queue.

Opening "Starting Balance" transactions are hidden from lists and searches — they're account setup, not spending. You can still edit one from the account's detail page.

The detail panel

Click a payee to open the full detail: the complete raw bank description, the memo, and — for a card transaction — the reserve trace showing exactly how that charge moved money into the card's payment category.

The trace is the per-transaction version of how credit cards work. If a card number ever looks wrong, start here.

Deleting

Open the transaction and choose delete. Deleting one side of a transfer removes both. Reconciled transactions must be unlocked first by undoing their reconciliation.
